Houlihans today

I confess I am feeling a bit burnt out, but here are my thoughts for today. First, is anyone else coming? =) It has been rather sparse lately.

I really want to step up the level of organization a little bit. I confess, I am not 100% confident in this area, but I figure I’ll learn on the job. One thing I want to get doing is to have a group of volunteers who agree and commit to trading off the responsibility of attending the Board Meetings, at least until the end of the Public Comment section (usually near the beginning of the meeting). The idea is that we will have consistent messages to deliver to the Board. So obviously, we need to figure out 1) what those messages are and 2) who is willing to deliver it. Of course, I count myself as a volunteer but I don’t want to be on the hook for every single Board Meeting. Besides, sharing is so much fun.

Even if you are the kind of person that has never been to a Board Meeting or feel totally intimidated, I would be willing to walk you through the motions (literally). Could be a learning experience.

Any takers?

For now my kids will no longer be students in Unit 4. I never would have thought things would have ended up this way, but, there you have it. However, I hope that as a community member I am still welcome to be part of your education reform efforts. I ask here, because maybe there are other parents out there who wish to be involved with improving our schools even though they do not currently have children attending the school districts here.

I would be willing to be a volunteer with the board meeting comment stuff. I really can follow a ‘script’ when I am not speaking just for myself : ) .

Karen, you know we don’t card people as they come in – everyone is welcome. 🙂 But thank you for asking that in a public way such that other parents who might be wondering the same thing can see the answer.

Allow me to extend my condolences about your situation; you obviously care very much for your children and are very involved in their lives. Based on that alone, I believe your kids will do well no matter where they are (but that’s just me talking).

I’ll start making a list of volunteers. I am going to ask volunteers to pick a month (Regular Board Meetings are typically the 2nd Monday of the month) and watch the BOE website (http://www.champaignschools.org/board-meetings.html) to see when Regular Board Meetings are scheduled. I do not recall when they set the calendar fro 2012-2013, but presumably it will be soon. Next Board Meeting is June 11th.

I don’t know what to do about Special Board Meetings. I try to go to those as well. If we can work out a schedule for those, that would be super swell. 🙂

Karen – you are not alone. I too am removing my children from U4. I plan to continue to work to see things improve in U4. My kids were at St. Matthew until this year and will return there next. From talking with teachers at both places the amount of material covered is significantly higher at St. Matthew and we will spend the summer playing catch up.

Yes, this will have a major impact on the family budget with 4 in school. But it is an investment that I will make so that my kids get a good education in an environment where parents are engaged (comes with writing a big check) and the mission is educating the whole student (mind, body, soul, and spirit) in a Catholic environment. Amazing how many U4 faculty and staff have agreed with our decision. Even more amazing when you realize how many of these U4 employees choose something other than U4.

I’ve had neighbors move to Mahomet this month because of schools. I have an employee asking to transfer to another office because they are on the wait list at NextGen and won’t put their kids in U4 (their house is for sale). I have other neighbors searching for private alternatives. I ask them why and the answers generally are low academic standards/expectations/performance in a less than good classroom environment.

So for you two that have commented on a similar theme, is this something we should put on our list of things to bring to the Board on a consistent basis? Bill, want to join our as-yet short list of folks who will attend a Board Meeting or two next year?
