Improving service to parents & students
The retreat will be held on Monday, October 8 at the Mellon Administration Center from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and I welcome your attendance and participation.
We will build off of the good intentions discussed in June and discuss specific areas to improve our service to parents and students. The items we plan on discussing include parent advocacy—what we currently have in place, where gaps exist, and how can we fill those gaps.
Another item of discussion is how we welcome our students and parents at critical times of transition, such as kindergarten, sixth and ninth grade. As an organization, we want to improve on how we work with our parents and how we partner with them in the education of their children.

The agenda is available from BoardDocs; aside from “Items for Discussion”, Orlando Thomas will also be asking the Board to sign off on a public hearing about a waiver for PE. Looking at the waiver documents, I wonder why they just don’t write the exception into the policies.
The two items for discussion are:
— Student and Parent Centered Organization: Dr. Judy Wiegand
— Elementary Facility Needs: Arlene Vespa (more info on BoardDocs) – addressing increased enrollment by possibly adding to Robeson and Bottenfield for another $3mil

Isn’t the important question to ask, how long will this blimp of increase of young children last? Get a good demographer to do some decent project rather than proposing anothr $3M building project. Just think all of these building project might not have been necessary if Unit 4 had thought through alternative ways to keep many of the former school buildings.

Yeah, you know, I think I am going to mention that tonight. We are spending a lot of money on enlarging and “enhancing” existing buildings, and a lot of money on external demographers. What is really odd to me is that we have had a Facilities Committee for a while – I have not gone to their meetings or looked at the minutes (yet), but I very much wonder what that group has been doing.
When DeJong packs up their bags, what is going to be left in place to provide a way to help us continually look at and plan for the future? There are quite a few places in town that can absolutely work magic with ArcGIS and there is no reason why we have to keep paying out-of-staters to do this for us.
