Two news items from Unit 4

Tonight is the ground-breaking at Bottenfield to celebrate the expansion/renovation. From Stephanie Stuart:

A ground breaking ceremony for the expansion and renovation of Bottenfield Elementary School will be held on Tuesday, July 2 at 5:30 p.m. at the school, which is located at 1801 S. Prospect Avenue in Champaign.

The $6.3 million expansion and renovation project will begin this summer. The expansion includes new construction of 16,000 square feet featuring a gymnasium and additional classroom space, along with the original 33,000 square feet undergoing extensive renovations. Local contractor Broeren Russo was the low bidder for the project and was awarded the contract. The new school has been designed by Cannon Design and Bailey Edward Architects. The contractor for the project, Broeren Russo, was approved by the Board of Education on June 17, 2013.

Features of the renovated and expanded Bottenfield will include a separate gym and cafeteria, a new secured front entrance, updated technology infrastructure, and expanded parking. The library and classrooms will also see extensive updates, in addition to updated thermal windows.

For the 2013-14 school year, Bottenfield Elementary will be housed at the former Carrie Busey Elementary school at 1605 W. Kirby. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2014, so Bottenfield can resume operation at 1801 S. Prospect in time for the 2014-15 school year.

Similar expansion and renovation projects are wrapping up at Westview Elementary School, where students will return to school this fall, and will occur at Kenwood Elementary School during the 2014-15 school year. Robeson Elementary will be renovated over the next two summers, but space will not be added so relocation will not be necessary.

All of these projects, including Bottenfield, are part of the promises made to the community as part of the 1% sales tax increase in 2009. The projects are being monitored by the Promises Made, Promises Kept Committee and include the newly renovated Garden Hills Elementary School as well as the newly constructed Booker T. Washington STEM Academy and Carrie Busey Elementary School in Savoy.

Starting next year, any child entering 6th grade or above will be required to have proof of a TDAP vaccine shot (tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis). The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District is making these shots available; not sure if there are cheaper/free resources for those in tight situations.
