updates

Aside from all the media attention on the Central Highschool site, there has been little else abuzz.

The first 40 minutes of the May 12 BOE meeting was devoted to “Recognitions”; much of that time was spent honoring art work from children of most the schools. Art teachers introduced the students who then shook everyone’s hand. After that, service awards were handed out for teachers, wrapping up with National Board Certified teachers (one newly certified, one recertified).

For public comment, the owner of Domino’s Pizza stood up to thank the district for their patronage.

About the next 40 minutes were given to a presentation about ALICE crisis response procedures and to pitch ALICE response training. Total cost will be about $2000 for two people, I believe.

Some policy changes were then discussed, and then Mr. David Hohman gave a short update on PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career). He stressed the thought that we are going more computer centric and how we are working towards a 4:1 device/student ratio to support PBA (Performance Based Assessments).

The DLR Group presented next. Not seeing the presentation online at all, I asked for the URL and Unit 4 posted it here:

I am hoping the presentations from the April 28th BOE meeting will be made available soon.

Any idea about what happened at 2:23:15 which lead to Bambaneck’s bizarre lashing out asking for a teacher to be fired? I found it disturbing making such inappropriate comments during a board meeting.

    • AlisonC Says:

I was surprised the board appointed Bambenek in the first place over some other excellent candidates, but where’s the video?

      • charlesdschultz Says:

        @AlisonC: The video is here:

@concerned parent: I do not know. I thought it was rather curious myself, and I even rewound and listened again to what he was saying. I will email him personally, and I encourage you to do the same:

      • AlisonC Says:

The agenda item was “Notice to Remedy” which is apparently what’s required if a tenured teacher needs to get his act together (i.e. remedy your problems), and if he fails to do so within the prescribed amount of time, the board will have the right to fire him. I don’t think we’re going to find out what the teacher in question did to get in that situation–at least, not publicly/officially. (Perhaps Dr. Howard parents know.) If the teacher didn’t have tenure, the board would just fire him, or at least not rehire him for next year, and I think Bambenek was upset it couldn’t be done in this case. I don’t know what kinds of mischief fall within the Notice to Remedy realm and outside the immediate-firing realm, but Google would probably tell you.

If this is a personnel issue, why is it not handled in closed session. P2

    • charlesdschultz Says:

@pattsi, due to OMA, all board votes have to be counted in public session. Typically, most or all the details are indeed in closed session. Bambenek just expressed some opinions in public session, and nobody knows why. 🙂

As another example, at the May 19th BOE meeting, Herbert Howard is receiving a “Recommendation for Termination”. No details, but the Board will vote in public session.

However, I have to say from my point of view, nobody wants to comment on the rest of the updates?!?
