Getting to know… Maggie Beckett, First Grade Teacher

My name is Maggie Beckett and after 11 years teaching early childhood special education, I left the Champaign Early Childhood Center to take on a new challenge and here I am!! I absolutely love teaching 1st grade, the 1st grade team, and the amazing staff that has welcomed me to the building. I am looking forward to making many new memories at Carrie Busey. Along with liking a challenge every now and again…I also don’t know what to do with down time…so I work. When I am not at school, you can find me at Sephora. I work there for fun and for the gratis.

I grew up in Mahomet, Illinois and went to school in Seymour, Illinois for kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade. In 3rd grade, I transferred to the Mahomet Seymour School District. After high school, I studied Early Childhood Education at Illinois State University and received my Masters in Early Childhood Special Education from the University of Illinois.

When I am not working…I enjoy reading, photography, and traveling. I have been to Spain, France, England, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Mexico, and Belize. I would love for my next trip to be to Ireland.

One of my childhood memories is running around Carrie Busey as my sister’s shadow. My older sister is hearing impaired and attended Carrie Busey as a student, so the hallways are familiar to me and sign language is my second language. I love that I have the opportunity to practice signing with students, parents, and staff at Carrie Busey. I feel I have come full circle in a sense.

Thank you to Mr. Scott for the opportunity to be a part of the Carrie Busey Family, to the staff for welcoming me aboard, and to students and families for an amazing first half of the year. I am looking forward to what the future holds!
